Double for Griffiths

Former Lido favourites Alex Gammond, Mark Jones and Sacha Walters were all in the Briton Ferry starting lineup with former youth player Daniel Merrick on the bench. Until the eightieth minute this game could have gone either way. Lido led by a single goal at that point, a goal scored on twenty six minutes by Michael McCalmon, his seventh of the season putting him ahead in the goal scoring stakes. Liam Griffiths replaced Owen Williams on seventy four minutes and Ioan Evans replaced Taylor Evans a minute later. Liam went on to score in the eighty first and eighty eighth minutes and Ioan on eighty three minutes to secure the result. We also saw a return for Tian Mills and goalkeeper substitute Stefan Rogers replacing Michael McCalmon as an outfield player.

Edwards spot on

Jordan Edwards converted three second half penalties as the Lido came back from a two goal deficit to defeat previously unbeaten Pontypridd Town.

The game started quietly with both sides looking to get a foothold in the game. Pontypridd took the lead on 12 minutes when Gavin Beddard slotted home from close range. Harry Davies was booked on 17 minutes stopping a swift break by the visitors. On 21 minutes there was a huge appeal from the Lido players for a hand ball in the area but it was waved away by the referee. Pontypridd continued to dominate with a series of corners which were well defended by the Lido players. Goalscorer Gavin Beddard was booked on 34 minutes for a strong challenge  and just before the interval there was a big chance for Pontypridd to double their lead. They attacked down the left, the ball was cut back but the shot from a good position went over the bar.

Pontypridd went two up in the 47th minute when Steve Morris turned the ball into his own goal. Lido kicked off and immediately got back in the game, David Vincent was sent off for a foul in the area and Jordan Edwards stepped up to score from the spot. Lido pushed forward looking for an equaliser and it came on 72 minutes courtesy of another Jordan Edwards penalty. It got even better on 78 minutes when Jordan converted his third penalty of the night and put the Lido in front. On a night of penalties, Pontypridd were awarded one on 82 minutes but Lee Baldock hit the post and the rebound was ruled out. It got worse for Pontypridd on 84 minutes when Oliver Dalton was sent off leaving the 9 men minutes to find an equaliser. The nearest they got was a 92nd minute attack which saw a shot sail over the bar. A great result for the Lido which saw them rise a couple of places in the table.

Reserves beat Ynysygerwn

Although officially an away game this was played at the Lido as Ynysygerwn have problems at present with their floodlights.

Ynys started brightly and were awarded a free kick 25 yards out in a central position but the kick hit the wall and was partially cleared, it was again picked up by Ynys but the through ball was overhit and went through to Gareth Couch in goal. Again on 7 minutes Ynys had a free kick which and despite no real pressure on the defence it took a couple of attempts to clear. Lido finally attacked and won a corner which was turned behind for a second which was headed at the keeper. Following another corner on 14 minutes the Lido took the lead, the corner was cleared but played back into the box for Liam Griffiths to score his first goal for the Reserves. Ynys again attacked and it took a flying save from Gareth Couch tipping the ball over the crossbar to deny them an equaliser. On the half hour Jordan Pike delayed his clearance, it was blocked and with Gareth Couch out of position the ball rolled inches wide of the far post and out for a goal kick. It was a costly miss as within a minute the returning Morgan Gardner scored with a shot from the edge of the area. No sooner did Ynys kick off when they found themselves three down when Michael McCalmon went through to score. In the closing stages of the half Gareth Couch again saved an Ynys shot to preserve his clean sheet.

Lido kicked off the second half and a strong run down the right by Michael McCalmon set up Luke McDonald but his shot sailed over the bar. Finally on 52 minutes Ynys pulled back a goal and it was from the penalty spot. Minutes earlier Gareth Couch was hit in the face with the ball and needed treatment. Nathan Davies stepped up to score from the spot and be the first to beat Couchie from 12 yards this season. Minutes later he was forced to leave the field and Cai Owens took his place between the sticks. Lido increased their lead on 64 minutes following a quick break. The ball was played wide right to Michael McCalmon and his shot from wide outside the area went over the keeper and into the net for his sixth reserve team goal. Ynys again attacked but Cai Owens safely held the incoming shot. On 81 minutes he produced a great save tipping over a free  kick which was going into the top corner. However, Ynys weren’t to be denied as from the corner Daniel Griffin netted with a shot which gave Cai no chance. No more goals but a couple of half chances for the Lido as they saw time out.

Three points on the road

The club would like to send best wishes and a speedy recovery to Terry Ryan father of Trefelin manager Richard who is ill at present.

Lido came out on top in this first ever competitive game against Trefelin. First half goals from Josh Webber and a penalty by Jordan Edwards was enough to secure the three points. Trefelin battled hard in the second half but to a man Lido defended heroically with the returning Stefan Rogers making a number of notable saves in goal.

Trefelin played with a strong wind at their backs but it was the Lido who settled the better. Chris Curtis picked up a first minute booking when he brought down Jordan Edwards but the free kick was wasted. Lido did take the lead on 10 minutes when Josh Webber latched onto a through ball and slotted his shot underneath Chris Curtis into the back of the net. Within two minutes Ryan Griffiths  shot from distance the ball dipped with the wind and rattled off the crossbar for a goal kick. Trefelin’s Ceri Williams picked up the ball at the back post and took a shot at goal which Steffan Rogers did well to turn behind for a corner. Lido went two up on 22 minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Ioan Evans was adjudged to have been brought down in the box. Jordan Edwards took the kick and confidently tucked it away although Curtis guessed the right way.

Trefelin were awarded a free kick outside the box, Sean Hanbury stepped up and floated it over the wall and Rogers did well to save. Lido had a great chance to extend their lead on 42 minutes when Jordan Edwards raced clear of the defence and tried to lift a shot over the advancing Curtis but the keeper got a hand to it and managed to keep it out. A great save keeping Trefelin in touch.

Trefelin came out for the second half in determined fashion and almost pulled a goal back after 48 minutes. A double chance was saved by two last ditch goal line clearances from the Lido defence. The first shot was hooked off the line by Steve Morris while Latham’s resulting header was nodded clear by Cai Owens. Lido looked to have added a third on 53 minutes following a free kick. Jordan  Edwards nodded in a free kick but was adjudged to have been offside although it may have been another player who was actually offside. On the hour Lido had another chance to extend their lead when Josh Webber whipped in a low cross which Jordan Edwards connected with and it somehow hit Chris  Curtis and stayed out. With 25 minutes to go Trefelin were having a period of possession and created a series of half chances while they were camped out in the Lido half. Chris Jones took a potshot from distance which fizzed just wide. Trefelin created another chance when they broke quickly Griffiths picked it up unmarked on the edge of the box and took his shot under no pressure but somehow missed the target. Trefelin continued to apply pressure and Ceri Williams was played through on goal with only Rogers to beat but the Lido keeper positioned himself superbly and blocked the shot.  With 15 minutes to go, Jordan Edwards was pulled back near the half way but the free kick was cleared. Trefelin pulled a goal back with thirteen minutes to go, Joseph Jones nodded in after a long range cross rebounded off the bar. With 5 minutes to go Lido had another chance to settle the game when Jordan Edwards raced free. His shot was blocked but the rebound fell to Harry Davies whose effort is planted straight at Chris Curtis. Trefelin continued to pile on the pressure in search of the equaliser but Lido broke clear and played the final minutes deep in Trefelin territory
